Stop Beating That Dead Horse!
You’ve heard the saying, “Don’t beat a dead horse“, right? It simply means that beating a dead horse will have no effect on said horse — it will remain dead. Still, humans spend a great deal of their time mercilessly beating a carcass, perhaps, with the intent of bringing it back to life, because it’s all they have, or maybe, because they are afraid of change. Whatever the reason may be, it’s a waste of energy.
I’ve comprised a list of ten signs that it is time for a change. Don’t be afraid to let go when it’s time to let go.
1- It No Longer Feeds You
Life is about growth. If you are not being fed, you will not grow. And, even worse, you’ll die. When someone, or something, is no longer giving you what you need in order to flourish, it’ probably time to reassess the relationship or situation. Maybe you’ve outgrown it — and there’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t have to burn bridges to follow your cosmic design. Gently align yourself with that which feeds you, without offending current associations (if possible.)
Never feel bad about evolving. Evolution is what life is about. You’ll never go anywhere by standing still.
2 – It Robs You
When you walk away from a person (or people,) or a situation, and you feel depleted, it is definitely time to go. Spend your time and energy on things (people) that give you life. As we are all on a quest to be the light, we cannot allow our light to burn out as we give light to others. Protect your flame!
3- You’re No Longer Interested
What interests you today, might not interest you tomorrow. Allow yourself the right to become uninterested. So, it doesn’t light your fire anymore? SO WHAT! It probably means that something else does. Create time and space for new things, by clearing your closet of things that you no longer have a need for (ie: those things, or people who no longer light your fire.) Without a doubt, the things that you’ve learned from past activities and relationships, will make your new interests even greater.
4 – You’re Bored
Boredom can be quite dangerous because, it can evoke unpleasant emotions, such as: anger, depression, or anxiety (to name a few.) If your current situation bores you — LET IT GO! Find something that excites you (usually, it’s the opposite of what bores you,) and work the hell out of it! Know what stopped me from being hopelessly bored? Writing Afrologik! Find your untapped talents (we all have them,) and activate them. Whatever method that you decide to use, never accept boredom.
5 – You Don’t Care
If you say that you don’t care, and you really mean it — you’re done. Most of us are driven by passion, you can’t be passionate about about things that you don’t care about. Think inward and find out what you do care about, and change the things in your life that you no longer have passion for.
6 – You Dream of Other Things
I’m all too familiar with being in one situation, while dreaming of a better situation. If your mind is somewhere else, follow it. It could be the Universe’s way of telling you that the time has come to move on. By staying still, you’re only denying yourself. Follow your cosmic design. It’s trying to lead you to your dream!
7 – You’re Angry Or Depressed
I don’t care what anyone says; no one can function effectively while in a state of depression, or anger. Although, I believe that all emotions are useful, as they can be used as motivation — but only if they are motivating you to work hard at a solution. Anything or anyone who makes you angry and depressed, more than happy and encouraged, needs to go.
8 – You Dread It
When you are extremely apprehensive of something, and the very thought of it makes you physically sick, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll give your best effort. And, if you cannot give your best effort, why even bother?
9 – You Wait Until The Last Minute
Waiting until the last minute usually indicates a lack of incentive; in other words — you don’t want to do it. And, you probably won’t give your best to something that you really don’t want to do. The easy solution would be: don’t do what you don’t want to do. However, that isn’t realistic. Sometimes, we have to do things that we don’t want to do — that’s life (it’s also, largely, the reason why adulting sucks!) Even though we sometimes have to do things that we don’t enjoy — we don’t have to stay in situations that we dread so badly that we wait until the last minute to act on them. Make a choice to choose something else. Search for better. Find better. Live better.
10 – It Has Become A Routine
When you’ve done something so many times, that you know whats going to happen before it happens — you definitely need to shock your system! In the customer service field, you spend eight hours per day repeating the same phrases, paragraphs, and answering the same damned questions, over, and over again — ad nauseam! All while being told to sound happier while being a broken record (are you effin kidding me??) If you are a creative person, this is spiritual suicide! Although writing is my respite, it’s certainly time for a career change.
Routines work for some people, as routines are safe and dependable. Whereas, for some of us, they’re dull, predictable, and redundant. If you don’t like, or are tired of the routine, take steps toward changing it. The Universe will only guide you towards growth — there can be no growth without change — “change” being the operative word. If it is a routine, it doesn’t change. But, you can.
Early Spring Cleaning
Spring is near, so is Spring cleaning (we’ll talk more about that in later articles.) Let’s clear out some headspace by getting rid of that which does not work for you anymore, and make room for new things that will promote new life, growth…EVOLUTION! Stop beating that dead horse! The dream is in sight. You’re almost there. You just need to tweak a few things.
“In the process of letting go, you will lose many things from the past, but you will find yourself.”
